information technology Milind Deora criticising the revised mobile tower
radiation norms.
The
letter states that it is unfair that citizens be charged Rs4,000 if the
radiation levels recorded by the government agencies in the vicinity of mobile
towers is less than 450 milli watts per square metre
(mW/sqm).
“A
notification should be issued to state and local municipal bodies to issue
directives for fixing the distance of mobile towers from residences and height
at which antennas should be fixed,” said Chawla in her letter. Last month, the
ministry came out with revised rules which limit the radiation levels of mobile
towers to be under 450 mW/sq m. Earlier, the limit of radiation level was up to
4,500 mW/sq m.
“The
ministry needs to explain how they arrived at a ceiling of 450 mW/sqm when
residents have health complaints at radiation levels which have been much
lower,” said PR Munshi, an anti-radiation
activist.
